Tesla to Bring FSD to the Semi by Early 2027, Opens First Dedicated Megacharger Station in California

Tesla's Semi program is accelerating on two fronts simultaneously. At the Q2 2026 earnings call on July 22, Elon Musk confirmed that Full Self-Driving is coming to the electric semi-truck — the first time he has put a specific timeline on autonomous capability for commercial freight. And separately, Tesla has opened the first dedicated Megacharger station in Bloomington, California, providing the public charging infrastructure that fleet operators have been waiting for since the Semi entered high-volume production in April.

Musk's Exact Words on Semi FSD

Musk's statement from the earnings call was unambiguous: "We expect to get self-driving working on the Tesla Semi probably around the end of this year or early next year." He acknowledged that FSD development for Semi is currently secondary to Model 3/Y and Cybercab, but the timeline — late 2026 or early 2027 — is closer than most industry analysts had assumed.

The Semi is already hardware-ready for the transition. The production vehicle features 10 external cameras plus an interior cabin camera, a sensor suite specifically designed to support advanced autonomy. Currently those cameras power active safety features including emergency braking and lane departure warnings. FSD (Supervised) would initially use the same hardware to reduce driver fatigue on long-haul routes before Tesla pursues fully unsupervised operation.

Nevada Factory: 50,000 Trucks Per Year Target

Tesla's Semi manufacturing facility in Sparks, Nevada — a 1.7-million-square-foot complex adjacent to Gigafactory Nevada — officially began high-volume commercial production on April 29, 2026. The plant is targeting an annual run rate of 50,000 Semi trucks, a figure that would make Tesla the largest producer of Class 8 electric trucks by volume within two years of the factory's opening.

A separate "Meet Semi" event at Tesla's Naperville showroom near Chicago (July 20-21) allowed fleet operators to review charging infrastructure, total cost of ownership models, and operational logistics firsthand.

The dual-event approach signals a commercial strategy shift: Tesla is no longer just building trucks, it's building the fleet relationships needed to deploy them at scale.

The Bottom Line for Fleet Operators

The Semi FSD timeline and Megacharger network expansion address the two biggest objections fleet operators have raised since the vehicle launched: "What's the autonomy roadmap?" and "Where do we charge on routes we don't own?" Musk's end-of-2026/early-2027 FSD commitment and the Bloomington station opening answer both questions with something fleet customers can plan around. The trucks are shipping. The charging is appearing. The autonomous capability is on a timeline. For freight companies still on the fence, the calculus is getting harder to ignore.
