NHTSA Opens Suspension Probe Into 1.2 Million Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Vehicles

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a preliminary investigation into approximately 1.2 million Tesla vehicles over reports of a front suspension component detaching without warning. The probe covers Model 3 vehicles from the 2018 through 2020 model years and Model Y vehicles from 2021 through 2023 — a wide swath of the two best-selling Teslas on the road today.

The investigation, which became public in late July and was widely reported by August 3–4, 2026, represents one of the largest active safety inquiries Tesla has faced in recent memory in terms of vehicle count.

What's Failing and Why It Matters

NHTSA received 156 owner complaints alleging that the front lower lateral link — a structural suspension arm that connects the wheel hub to the vehicle's subframe — can detach unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion.

When the front lower lateral link separates, the affected wheel loses its geometric reference point. The result is sudden and severe impairment to steering and directional stability, rendering the vehicle effectively undriveable mid-travel. Because the failure can occur without warning and at road speeds, the safety risk extends beyond the vehicle's occupants to other drivers and pedestrians.

NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) states it has not received any reports of crashes, injuries, or fatalities tied to this specific defect as of the probe's opening — but the combination of sudden onset and steering loss makes the issue a priority to investigate.

The scale jump is striking. Prior Tesla actions on the same component addressed hundreds of vehicles; the current probe encompasses more than a million. NHTSA investigators have noted that the complaints under this investigation "appear to extend beyond the scope of those earlier recalls and may point to a different technical cause."

What Happens in a NHTSA Preliminary Evaluation

A preliminary evaluation is the agency's earliest formal stage of defect investigation. It precedes an engineering analysis, which in turn precedes a recall decision. At this stage, NHTSA is gathering complaint data, interviewing owners and repair facilities, and requesting information from the manufacturer.

Tesla has not issued a public statement in response to this investigation. In at least one documented owner case, Tesla initially denied the issue was a known defect, though the company reportedly covered the repair under warranty in that instance.

If NHTSA upgrades the probe to an engineering analysis and ultimately finds a safety-related defect, Tesla could be compelled to initiate a recall covering the full 1.2 million vehicles. Each recall campaign carries significant costs — parts, labor, owner notification — in addition to reputational exposure at a time when Tesla faces pricing pressure from BYD and legacy automakers.

The Bottom Line for Affected Owners

If you own a 2018–2020 Model 3 or a 2021–2023 Model Y, this probe is worth monitoring but does not require immediate action. NHTSA has not issued a consumer advisory warning drivers to stop using these vehicles. The 156 complaints represent a small fraction of the 1.2 million vehicles under review.

That said, owners who experience unusual noises from the front suspension — particularly clunking, grinding, or a feeling of looseness at low speeds or over bumps — should contact their Tesla service center and document the experience. Filing a complaint directly at NHTSA's consumer portal is one of the primary ways regulators build the evidentiary base to escalate an investigation.
