Every 2026 Model Y Now Ships with 16-Inch Screen and Black Headliner — No Upgrade Needed

5 min read read

On June 5, 2026, Tesla updated its U.S. Model Y configurator without a press release or announcement email. When the dust settled, every single trim — from the $39,990 base Rear-Wheel Drive to the Performance variant — now ships with the 16-inch QHD touchscreen and an all-black headliner as standard equipment. No option. No upcharge. Just included.

The change closes the loop on a hardware refresh that started in China in early 2026, migrated to Canada in late February, and has now reached every Model Y rolling off Fremont's lines for American buyers.

What Changed, Trim by Trim

Until this week, the light grey fabric headliner was standard on base trims, and the 15.4-inch Full HD display was the norm outside the higher-tier configurations. That hierarchy is gone.

Feature Before June 5 After June 5
Screen size 15.4 inches 16 inches
Screen resolution 1920x1200 (Full HD) 2560x1440 (QHD)
Screen aspect ratio 16:10 16:9
Headliner — base RWD/AWD Light grey fabric All-black Alcantara-style
Headliner — Premium/Perf All-black (already standard) All-black (unchanged)

All five U.S. trims are covered: base RWD ($39,990), base AWD ($41,990), Premium RWD, Premium AWD, and Performance. Canada's configurator had already reflected the same changes earlier in the spring.

The 16-Inch Screen: What the Upgrade Actually Delivers

The jump from 15.4 to 16 inches is not just a number. The resolution climbs from 1920x1200 to 2560x1440 — a full QHD panel — which translates to noticeably crisper text in the navigation map, sharper FSD visualization overlays, and higher-contrast media playback. The aspect ratio also shifts from 16:10 to 16:9, so content fills the screen more naturally.

Third-party aftermarket companies have sold 16-inch retrofit kits for years, some priced over $1,000. Owners who held off now get the same hardware baked in at no additional cost.

Black Headliner: Long-Requested, Finally Universal

The grey headliner on base trims drew persistent complaints in owner forums for years. Owners cited its tendency to look dirty over time and the jarring contrast against the dark cabin at night. Tesla's move to black Alcantara-style fabric on all trims eliminates that distinction.

The base $39,990 Model Y RWD and the $41,990 Model Y AWD in the U.S. now come standard with an all-black headliner and the larger 16-inch center touchscreen. — Not a Tesla App, June 5, 2026

The black headliner had been in high demand in online communities long before Tesla began rolling it out in China in early 2026. Now the entire global lineup is aligned.

Other June 5 Pricing Notes

The configurator update also carried a few adjustments that prospective buyers should note:

  • The Model 3 Premium free Supercharging promotion ends June 15, 2026
  • The Model 3 RWD lease increased $30/month to $329/month
  • The Model Y AWD financing shifted from 0% to 0.99% APR

These are separate from the hardware upgrade, but buyers comparing deals from last week to this week should factor them in.

The Bottom Line for Model Y Shoppers

Tesla has historically tiered its hardware by trim level, making buyers pay more to get the interior they actually wanted. The June 5 rollout breaks that pattern — at least for the touchscreen and headliner. Anyone ordering a Model Y today in the U.S. or Canada gets the same screen hardware as the top-of-the-line configuration, regardless of which trim they choose.

For existing owners, the update does not change their hardware. But for anyone currently shopping, the calculus on how much to spend to get the nice screen just got a lot simpler: any trim will do.
