Musk did not point to a specific repository, identify a software license (MIT, Apache, GPL), or outline which components of the vehicle design will be included. Hardware design files and embedded firmware are governed by very different intellectual property frameworks, and the scope of a true "open source" release would need to address both.
There is also the question of third-party supplier components. Many subsystems in the Model S and Model X — battery cells, display units, radar modules — were sourced from suppliers who retain their own IP rights. Tesla cannot unilaterally open-source components it does not fully own. The Roadster release navigated similar constraints by focusing on Tesla-developed materials only.
The Bottom Line for Model S and Model X Owners
The announcement signals Tesla's intent to support the long-term serviceability of two vehicles that defined a decade of electric mobility. For current owners, the practical value depends entirely on what Tesla releases and when. If the Model S and Model X open-source library arrives with the depth of full engineering CAD files and diagnostic firmware access, it would meaningfully extend the useful life of both platforms independent of Tesla's own service organization.
