Tesla's newest grid storage product packages 20 megawatt-hours of battery capacity — along with an integrated transformer and switchgear — into a single deployable container. The Megablock, built around four Megapack 3 units, is designed to be commissioned at 1 GWh scale in 20 business days, cutting construction time by 23% and site costs by up to 40% compared to traditional grid-storage installations. Production at Tesla's Brookshire, Texas facility is on track to begin in late 2026.

Tesla introduced both the Megapack 3 and the Megablock system at its "Las Megas" event in September 2025. As of June 2026, the Brookshire Megafactory is gearing up for volume production — the window between announcement and deliverable hardware is closing. The facility's planned output of 50 GWh per year would make it the highest-capacity battery storage factory in the Western Hemisphere once fully ramped.

The Houston Factory's Scale

Tesla's Brookshire facility is located in the Empire West industrial park roughly 30 miles west of Houston. Designed for 50 GWh annual output, the factory will be supported by a 7 GWh LFP cell supply facility in Nevada that opened in 2025. The Megapack 3 uses a 2.8-liter LFP cell co-developed with Tesla and is rated for an operating temperature range of -40°C to 60°C — broad enough to cover most utility deployments without additional climate control.

Tesla is "targeting to commission 1 GWh in 20 business days, which is the equivalent of bringing" power to hundreds of thousands of homes monthly — from Tesla's Las Megas event, September 2025.

Context for that figure: Tesla's Q1 2026 energy storage results showed 8.8 GWh deployed in a single quarter — a record. At that trajectory, annual deployments would reach approximately 35 GWh. The Houston factory needs to fill a backlog that's building as utility-scale storage demand accelerates, driven by AI data center buildout and grid instability events across the U.S. South and West.

Site Density and Real-World Impact

The Megablock achieves 248 MWh per acre of site density — relevant for developers who face land constraints near urban load centers. The system carries a 25-year lifecycle rated at 10,000+ charge cycles and operates at 91% round-trip efficiency at medium voltage. Those figures compare favorably to both natural gas peaker plants (which burn fuel and have emissions) and competing battery storage systems (which typically operate at 85-88% round-trip efficiency).

The 400,000-home figure Tesla references represents a 1 GWh installation supplying homes for one day at average U.S. residential consumption. For utilities, the more meaningful number is dispatchable capacity on demand — and the ability to commission that capacity in 20 business days rather than the 12-18 months typical for permitting and construction of conventional generation.

The Bottom Line for Energy Storage

Tesla's energy business — often overshadowed by vehicle news — grew faster than the auto segment in Q1 2026 on a percentage basis. The Megablock applies the same hardware-plus-software integration logic Tesla used in cars: eliminate third-party components, reduce installation complexity, and price aggressively for scale. With the Houston factory approaching its first production runs and quarterly deployments already at record highs, the grid storage business is positioned for a meaningful acceleration in the second half of 2026 — independent of how the vehicle side performs.
