Tesla Adds Marine Blue and Frost Blue to Model Y and Model 3, Retiring Deep Blue Metallic After 8 Years

4 min read read

Tesla quietly updated its configurator on May 8, 2026, adding two new shades of blue to the Model Y and Model 3 lineup — and simultaneously retiring Deep Blue Metallic, a color that had been part of Tesla’s palette for more than eight years. The two new options, Marine Blue and Frost Blue Metallic, target different trim levels and carry different price structures depending on region.

The move signals Tesla’s continued effort to refresh its color palette as competition in the EV segment intensifies. Blue is among the most requested exterior colors for Tesla vehicles, and the previous Deep Blue Metallic had grown dated compared to the ocean-toned hues now common across German and Korean rivals.

Two Colors, Two Very Different Price Tags

Color Available Trims US Price Canada Price Europe Price
Marine Blue Long Range AWD, Performance +$1,000 +CAD $1,300 +€1,300
Frost Blue Metallic Performance only No charge Not available Not available

Marine Blue is described by Tesla as inspired by “the deep oceans” — a darker, richer shade that photographs well in overcast light and shows metallic flake at certain angles. It replaces Deep Blue Metallic as the brand’s premium blue across both Model Y and Model 3 lines worldwide.

Frost Blue Metallic is a cooler, lighter shade that Tesla previously reserved for Model S and Model X. Bringing it to Model Y and Model 3 Performance trims — at no additional cost in the US, Mexico, and Puerto Rico — gives those buyers a color that once cost thousands more on the flagship lineup.

Regional Availability Details

Frost Blue Metallic is “the same color Tesla previously offered on the Model S and Model X, giving Performance buyers a premium look without the usual color upcharge.” — Tesla Oracle, May 8, 2026

The regional picture is more fragmented than Tesla’s typical global rollouts:

  • United States, Puerto Rico, Mexico: Both Marine Blue and Frost Blue Metallic are available. Frost Blue is exclusive to Performance trims at no added cost.
  • Canada: Marine Blue is available on Long Range and Performance at CAD $1,300. Frost Blue Metallic has not been added yet.
  • Europe: Marine Blue is available at €1,300 extra on both Long Range and Performance. Frost Blue is unavailable — Giga Berlin’s paint shop has not been equipped to spray it.

Tesla has not announced a timeline for Frost Blue availability in Canada or Europe, though the paint is technically identical to the shade used on Model S/X at Fremont — suggesting supply chain constraints rather than engineering limitations are the limiting factor.

The End of Deep Blue Metallic

Deep Blue Metallic launched with early Model 3 production in 2017 and became one of Tesla’s most recognized colors. Its retirement closes an era. Compared to the new Marine Blue, the outgoing shade reads slightly more purple in direct sunlight — a characteristic that divided owners who preferred it over Tesla’s lighter Midnight Silver.

The Model Y Juniper, which launched in early 2025, introduced a similar Glacier Blue color in some markets, but that shade was never extended to Model 3. Marine Blue and Frost Blue are the first full-platform blue options since Deep Blue Metallic.

The Bottom Line for Buyers

If you’re configuring a Model Y or Model 3 Long Range and want blue, Marine Blue at $1,000 is now your only option in the US — and it’s a stronger color than what it replaces. Performance buyers get Frost Blue for free, a perk that makes an already well-specified trim feel more distinctive. Orders placed after May 8, 2026 reflect the new palette immediately in the Tesla configurator.
