How Tesla Light Shows Work — Technical Guide

What Is a Tesla Light Show?
A Tesla Light Show is a synchronized display where your car's exterior lights dance to music. Tesla introduced this feature in the 2021 Holiday Update for Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles manufactured from 2021 onward.
Light shows are powered by FSEQ files — a sequence format that tells each of your Tesla's 30 independently controllable light channels exactly when to turn on, off, or pulse. You load an FSEQ file onto a USB drive, plug it in, and your car performs the show.
How LightMyTesla Generates Light Shows
Our conversion pipeline analyzes your song in three stages:
- Audio Frequency Analysis — We split the audio into 18 frequency bands using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Each band covers a specific range: sub-bass (20–60Hz), bass (60–250Hz), low-mid (250–500Hz), mid (500–2kHz), upper-mid (2–4kHz), and high frequencies (4–20kHz).
- Light Channel Mapping — Each frequency band maps to specific light channels on your Tesla. Bass frequencies drive the headlights and front fog lights. Mid-range frequencies control the side marker lights and turn signals. High frequencies illuminate the taillights and brake lights.
- Frame Generation — We generate one light frame every 20 milliseconds (50 frames per second). Each frame contains the on/off/brightness state for all 30 light channels. A typical 3-minute song produces approximately 9,000 frames; a 5-minute song generates around 15,000 frames.
The 30 Light Channels
Your Tesla has 30 independently addressable light outputs:
- Headlights (low beam, high beam) — 4 channels
- Front fog lights — 2 channels
- Front turn signals — 2 channels
- Side marker lights — 4 channels
- Rear turn signals — 2 channels
- Taillights — 4 channels
- Brake lights — 2 channels
- Reverse lights — 2 channels
- Light bar (Model 3/Y) — 8 channels
Pulse vs. Vivid Styles
Pulse (free) uses pure frequency analysis — the same song always produces the same light show. It's deterministic and reliable.
Vivid (2 Bolts) adds AI choreography. Our AI listens to the lyrics, melody, tempo changes, and mood shifts to create patterns like chase sequences, breathing effects, and synchronized strobes. No two Vivid shows are identical.
Compatible Tesla Models
Light shows work on all Tesla vehicles with the 2021+ hardware platform:
- Model 3 (2021+)
- Model Y (all years)
- Model S (2021+ refresh)
- Model X (2021+ refresh)
How to Install a Light Show
- Download the ZIP file from LightMyTesla
- Extract it to a USB drive (FAT32 formatted)
- The USB drive should have a folder called
LightShowat the root - Inside, place the
.fseqfile and the matching audio file - Plug the USB into your Tesla
- Go to Toybox → Light Show → select your show
